Kedarkantha Mandir is open during April to November. Limitations to this site are its severe weather condition.
In 2013, the trails set their pace from Gaurikhand to Kedarkantha via Rambara. According to one of the calculation, total walking distance was only about 14 Kms and the route was decorated with the nice fence, Pubic shops and many shelters. Tragedy took place and this place got carried away due to flood. Thus, this route was permanently closed.
But, the trekking should be never stopped!
Journey to Kedarkantha started from Gaurikund to Kedarkantha which is now maintained by NIM (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering). This route was calculated of about 16 Kms by walking. This temple is not directly reached by road and has to be reached by 18Kms from Gaurikund.
Kedarkantha Trek begins:
One gets very excited living in the snow after all the hotness shared by sun. Himalaya experiences heavy snowfall before April. It lasts nearly in the fourth week of the April. Trees that come across your trails are pine and walnut, a huge blanket of snow soothing you with cold, meadows glittering all over. These things clear your site and fill you with energy to do the trek further. Each bivouac gives you the smell of new adventure awaiting your journey. Likewise, Pukhrola campsite in an open meadow to Kedarkantha’s summit giving the clear view.
Kedarkantha drives you through Mussoorie, Nowgaon, Purola and Mori before bringing you to Naitwar. Trekkers have to watch out for the section after Purola until the base camp. All around North, South, East and West trekkers gets astonished with the snow. This becomes “Sone pe Suhaga” (proverb) type of a feeling as you get closed to Kedarkantha.
Trek resides to Gaichawan Gaon!
It drives you for 8-9 hours from Dehradun passing by Mori and Purola. Ever-lasting valleys and Green forest freshen your breath and enlighten you with new notion of change. Here, Government has issued ID and to the right one reach out to Gainchwan Gaon. To the straight, it takes you to Sankri. With 45min of drive you pass by Gaon and can take a halt.
Altitude: 5500ft- 5600ft
Period: 8-9 hours from Dehradun
Trek from Gaichawan to Julato:

Period: 5 hours
This is an easy and a little steep ascent. You get the help of having water resources around. Sticking to the villagers’ path, Altwar is at a distance of 3 km from Gainchwan Gaon. This is considered as the most easy and affordable trek to pass on for pedestal.
You attract apple orchards, farm lands and Rupin valley which hands-on to your camera as a picture. Admitting to the beauty, dusty forest takes no less attention in learning its uniqueness. Water bottle can be refilled from here. You add- on in exclaiming a pine dense forest seemed to be very quiet, slabs of rocks, bunch of living huts and trails of trees as an art to life. A gradual ascent takes you to the stream and steep clearing takes you to Julota.
Kedarkantha Base (Pukhrola):
Period: 4 hours, 8950ft-11038ft
Way to Pukhrole rolled out as a long, aesthetic 300 m walk from a meadow which drains out sometimes due to altering weather condition. A picturing of sky with the sunset ends to the journey to the base of Kedarkantha.
Period: 6-7 hours
Heights: 11037ft – 12500ft – 10135ft
This route is found out to be easy – moderate, 2 hour steep to reach the summit. Water resources found here are scare. This is a final push towards the summit. Journey stars from early morning. Trekkers enchant zigzag way, 2 hours of journey to reach the summit, surrounded by mountain ranges and valleys. As retracing the way to Pukhrola, a slight deviation from the trial towards Pukhrola takes you on the trial towards Akroti Thach. At a stretch it will take 3 hours to complete the trek. One can reach Akroti trek by lunch time.
Hence, Kedarkantha trek to Akroti Thach finishes with the greatest “sahas” ever going in life.
What do you do in January and February?

The best way to reach here is from Kathgodam. Once you cross Nainital, beautiful sites sits by your eye window. Your retina captures picture of mountain roads passing down the forests, gets glimpses of the Garhwal Mountains in the distance on a clear day.
Period: Drive yourself from Kathgodam in 10 hours
Nanda Ghunti Peak: Lohajung
Lohajung is at the centre of 12-15 nearby villages. Nearby local stores calls you for buying necessities to the further trekking like jackets, hand gloves, caps, shoes, etc. It is honored to be called a place where Goddess Parvati had a war (jung) with the demon , Lohasur. Hence, this name Lohajung is named as Lohajung which can be translated as (a fight with Lohasur).
Lohajung to Bekaltal:
Heights: 7600ft – 9689ft
Period: 5-6 hours, 5.9Km
This journey is moderate and gradually ascending towards forests on trails. This trek begins from Lohajung Central market and goes from Bisht General Stores on the wall marked, human-made trial. Watch out this short trek, spot Mandoli village on the left. Climbing higher and higher in the altitude on the left, trekker sees the Kali valley, where there is a joining of two rivers Kali and Pindari. Following the water pipes which supplies water to Lohajung as they lie along the trek trial, trekkers find a small cluster of homes called Budla, on the left. You find cherished rhododendron trees, which make this trail very beautiful from February to March.
At the altitude of 8500 ft, 10 meter bridge is found across the stream. One reaches Begum, where people can take a little while halt. There you see a splendid view of Navali Bugyal and Bagdi Bugyal. Another stream awaits the journey at a distance of 10-15 minutes which brings you to the Gujrani Stream. It approximately takes 75 minutes walk to Bekaltal. Oak trees fantasize the lakes overall view.

BEKALTAL TO BRAHMTAL:
Heights: 9689ft – 10440ft
Period: Around 6 hours, 7 Km
This is the moderate track and initial steep climb for an hour that brings trekker to the gentle meadows. This gradually leads to ascend to Brahmtal.
There is a scarcity of water so it finds it very difficult and it becomes necessity to carry it during trekking.
Sleepy and Steep way leads the trekker to Oak and Rhododendron forest. Trekkers walking down in the meadows of forest and snow lying down at the feet giving warmth to reach Brahmtal. Walking is the medicine to level- up the ratio of heart rate and to suit to the altitude changing weather. Brahmtal is located to 11,500ft high to its gradual descent.
All through the day’s trek, one can see the Almora and Nainital side of the valley. Vision becomes clear watching out the mountains in its vicinity. Leaving back Trishul, Nanda Ghunti and the rest are just residing there but are still hidden.
